The Block House – Construction Case Study Promo

We’ve kicked off 2026 by shooting the “before” aerial plates and internal images for an ambitious renovation of an old WWII Watchtower in Swanbridge, Wales.

JB Construction will be leading the team under the instructions of Benjamin Hale Architects.

UPDATE JAN 2026 – PHASE ONE PROGRESS VIDEO BELOW:

This radical and unique project conserves and reimagines an existing World War II watchtower situated just a few feet from the cliff edge, overlooking the ancient site of Sully Island and the Bristol Channel. Nestled within a clearing of tall pines planted by the Marquess of Bute, the tower commands extensive views across the Channel, offering an unrivaled opportunity to construct a home in this remarkable coastal location.

The main structure of the tower is retained, while a corrugated steel “blanket,” echoing the World War II Nissen huts that once dotted the site, will envelop the entire structure in an insulated layer. An extension to the rear provides additional bedrooms and living spaces, all linked by the existing concrete staircase. Internally, the board-marked concrete of the tower is revealed, serving as a thermal mass to regulate internal temperatures. A lookout terrace, extending the height of the existing tower, will offer sweeping views of the Channel framed by the surrounding trees.

The strangeness and outré nature of the existing tower and the surrounding landscape were qualities we sought to celebrate and preserve. Through material choices that contrast, reflecting the dappled light of the sky, sea and trees, combined with a naturalistic approach to the surrounding gardens and landscape, the “found”quality of the tower and landscape is retained. This approach ensures the history and romance that initially attracted our client to this unique site remain.
